This Wednesday night, we wrap up Casks and Chords II at Queens Lounge with the incredible @sonikcitizen and his “Homage trio”.

Mark Fransman (aka Sonik Citizen) is one of South Africa’s eminent musicians. A multi-instrumentalist, composer and band leader, Fransman has certainly left an indelible mark on the face of South African Jazz.

The Homage Trio pays tribute to some of our country’s finest musicians. This is a can’t-miss gig for jazz lovers, and especially for those who want to catch the last Casks and Chords concert!

AF is one of my favourite venues in Cape Town and a beautiful listening venue. As the 5th installment of our Cape Town pre-album tour the music has been allowed to grow and find itself and is more exciting than ever. We are also proud to be joined by our new addition @jaydenharebottle on tenor saxophone.

Reflecting on some of the amazing opportunities I've had to play with some of this country's incredible musicians. I am a huge believer in the value and power of mentorship. Having not pursued formal music education after high school, my university has been in the field learning from the best.

Through this I believe I have been granted a great gift and I am incredibly grateful to everyone who has helped me along this journey.

I hope to add more and more to this collection and keep looking back to remember where I began and the people who have helped me along the way. ❤️

Last week I had the great privilege of attending my 6th National Youth Jazz Festival #nyjf in Makhanda. My first festival was 8 years ago, and this time around I was still filled with the same sense of immense joy and inspiration as the very first time I stepped onto DSG campus.

Going to the festival is one of the highlights of my year. It's the only time that one gets to be completely enveloped by music - almost every minute of every day you are playing, thinking about playing, talking about playing or simply enjoying yourself with other people who are really good at playing music. Every hour of rehearsal, every minute of 25bpm metronome alone in a practice room feels natural - the inspiration around you makes it almost impossible to not enjoy these things.

This year I had the distinct privilege of being selected for the National Youth Jazz Band for the second year in a row. This year's band was led by one of my personal musical idols, Afrika Mkhize. To work under Mr Mkhize was nothing short of a pleasure - his vast knowledge and deep love for music was apparent in everything we did and I feel like I have grown so much as a musician after just 5 days of working under him.

Thank you to my bandmates who made this experience even more amazing - @jaydenharebottle and @romeovalela13 on tenor sax 🎷, @giuliette_price on vocals 🎤, @khaya_mthembu_salter and @uviwecaso99 on guitars 🎸, @stuartmartin1704 on drums 🥁 and @powell._.adam on piano. 🎹 These are some of the finest musicians around and it was amazing to learn from and grow with them this week.

Thank you very much to my friends who made this experience as fun as it was. I would be nowhere without those around me supporting me and being there for me. No matter how stressed I could get about rehearsals or learning a particular piece or whatever was on my mind, I knew that all I needed to do was find my people and I would be instantly in a better place because of them.

Lastly, a huge thank you to Alan Webster, Kyle du Preez and all the rest of the #NYJF team. This festival has inspired me more than you could know over the past 8 years. Thank you for everything you do for young musicians.

Proof of work // Proof of Life

Hi all, I thought I'd come on here and do a little update post about what's been going on in my life. It's truly been an amazing year so far - so much has happened it's crazy to think that we are only just going into the 5th month next week.

I was very privileged to have a great summer season in Cape Town playing various gigs with my original music project at venues like Harrington's and The House Of Machines. To be able to showcase my original music and creativity for audiences is the greatest honour and I'm truly grateful to everyone who supported me and those gigs.

I spent most of February with my head buried in Sibelius doing arrangements for the Golden Oldies Kirstenbosch Summer Concert produced by the legendary Terry Fortune @terryfortune . Over 12 original arrangements of classic tunes written for stars such as Vicky Samson @vicky.sampson , Dr Victor, Leslie Kleinsmith, Aviva Pelham @aviva_pelham and more. The response to this project was amazing and my heart is full of joy even looking back on it. A sold out audience at Kirstenbosch hearing my arrangements is still something I can't quite fathom.

Shortly after that I hopped onto the bandstand of Mamma Mia under the direction of the incredible Charl-Johan Lingenfelder @charljohanlingenfelder . Joined by an incredible band and a stunning cast of industry stalwarts, I am beyond honoured to be part of this amazing production. After a completely sold out run at the Artscape theatre in Cape Town, we have moved into the Teatro at Montecasino where audiences are similarly loving the show.

I'm looking forward to returning to Cape Town in June. A few things in the pipeline - more Nick Ford Project gigs, recording some tracks for the eventual album which will come from it, competitions, and, hopefully, a successor to last year's Hard Bop Tribute project. Watch this space...

It was my honour and privilege to compete in the Stellenbosch University National Ensemble Competition this weekend. My band, the Nick Ford Jazz Unit, were awarded runner-up jazz ensemble in the Open category.

Thank you to @sukonservatorium for hosting this wonderful event, and a huge congratulations to the @sun_quintet for winning this year's competition, both in the open jazz ensemble category and overall!
